NeuroEPO and the ATHENEA Trial: What Cuba's Alzheimer's Research Means for Patients

NeuroCuba Editorial Team

A Cuban randomized clinical trial

In 2023, a team of Cuban neurologists and immunologists published the ATHENEA trial — a randomized clinical study of intranasal NeuroEPO (NeuralCIM®) in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's clinical syndrome. The work brought together the Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM), CIREN, and the Cuban Neurosciences Center.

What is NeuroEPO?

NeuroEPO is a nasal formulation of recombinant erythropoietin with low sialic-acid content, designed for neuroprotective use without the blood-cell-producing effects of traditional EPO. Delivered intranasally, it is intended to reach the central nervous system more directly.

Why it matters for patients

Peer-reviewed research is the foundation of credible patient information. The ATHENEA trial adds to a growing body of Cuban and international studies examining erythropoietin's potential neuroprotective role in Alzheimer's disease. Treatment eligibility, however, is always determined individually after a specialist reviews the patient's medical records.
